Itinerary

Day 1Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park

Today’s picturesque drive winds northwest through the Luwero Triangle and Masindi – a glimpse at a recovering Uganda. Gradually, the dusty red streets fade into green mountains and roaring rivers – the entrance to Murchison Falls National Park. This drive will be via Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary. During game viewing and visit to the information centre and craft shop, look out for rhinos, bushbuck, leopard, Uganda kob, oribi, crocodiles, hippo and other wildlife present on the ranch. The birdlife is also abundant with even the rare shoebill stork present in the Lugogo Swamps. Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers peace and tranquillity in a beautiful surrounding.

In the afternoon, you will visit the top of the falls. Marvel at the Nile, compressing from up to 1 km squeeze through a 7-metre canyon dropping 150 metres with a thunderous roar creating a beautiful rainbow, a plume of spray and the best thing that happened to the Nile…” the Murchison Falls”. Enjoy the sunset as you return to the lodge.

Enjoy the superb comfort and service of Paraa Safari Lodge.

Day 2Murchison Falls to the Northern Bank

Ford the placid Victoria Nile to reach the northern Bank, a haven for big game. As we bump across the open bush, your eyes and camera lens are treated to a smorgasbord of rare and exhilarating wildlife: African elephants, cape buffalos, lions, Rothschild’s giraffe, hartebeest, waterbuck, oribis, bushbucks, Bohor reedbucks, hyenas and if we’re lucky, leopards!

After a hearty lunch, we’ll board a boat safari upstream along the Victoria Nile, en route to the famed Murchison Falls. The river’s slow-moving waters house incredible sites, including toothsome hippos and massive crocodiles, as well as water-loving elephants, waterbucks and Uganda Kob.

Overnight at Paraa Safari Lodge.

Day 3Murchison Falls to Fort Portal

A day on the road takes us south, through the picturesque emerald countryside and traditional Hoima, to our final destination of Fort Portal. The historic town rests in the shadow of the fabled Mountains of the Moon and is the perfect base for explorations to Rwenzori Mountains, Kibale National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Dinner and overnight at Kibale Tented Camp or Ndali Lodge.

Day 4Day 4: Chimpanzee Trek

Today is dedicated to the region’s primates, especially our closest cousin, the chimpanzee. Our full-day adventure into Kibale Forest takes us in search of chimps, photos, red colobus, blues, red-tailed, grey-cheeked mangabey, and several other species. An informative hike also gets us up close and personal with the forest’s flora and fauna, including myriad bird species and, of course, primates in close quarters.

Dinner and overnight at Kibale Tented Camp or Ndali Lodge.

Day 5Queen Elizabeth National Park

As we wind our way through the mystical Ruwenzori Mountain Range, the scenery grows ever more magical. We proceed to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary to search for smaller mammals and primates. You will lookout for the rare red colobus monkey and the sitatunga. The guided 4.5km circular trail through the wetland is one of the best-guided bird trails in East Africa and also offers a realistic opportunity to spot up to six different primate species within a duration of few hours.

Later drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park following the mystical Ruwenzori Mountain range for much of the journey. A game drive en-route may be rewarded with views of lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, hyena and a variety of antelope species. In the afternoon enjoy the unique 2-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel and into Lake Edward. This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and other animals may also be seen drinking at the water’s edge. This launch cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing. The prolific bird life is colourful and stupendous with well over 550 resident species.

Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge.

Day 6Queen Elizabeth National Park

Ratchet up your wildlife watching and check a few more species off your ever-shrinking list, with today’s two-game drives. Queen Elizabeth National Park’s diverse ecosystem hugs us tight, spilling from the tropical forest into the freshwater river, swamps into volcanic craters, and grassy plains into crater lakes. The massive Rwenzori Mountains are the backdrop to our sojourns, as are the distinct profiles of some of the world’s most recognizable creatures: elephants, cape buffalos, lions and leopards, as well as giant forest hogs, defassa waterbucks, Uganda Kob, topi and bushbuck.

Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge.

Day 7Kyambura Gorge to Kampala

We’re up with the sun to depart to Kyambura Gorge, visitors can climb through the tropical forest to catch a glimpse of a variety of primates, including chimpanzee, black-and-white colobus, vervet and olive baboons that are regularly observed in the gorge. Elusive residents include a red-tailed monkey and the giant forest hog. This is also a good place for birdwatchers as forest birds are present.

After lunch, drive back to Kampala with a stop at the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers where you will able to watch the ceremonial drums being crafted using methods passed down through generations. There will also be time to stop at the equator for photographs. Arrival at Kampala in the early evening for a late flight or overnight in the city.
